Mary King

Mary King’s versatility has allowed her career to encompass a wide range of vocal genres, from opera and musicals to straight theatre. A popular and highly experienced mezzo soprano, Mary has worked with leading conductors and numerous orchestras across the world, and has made a particular feature of the contemporary classical repertoire.

She has had a long involvement with outreach and teaching, working with all the major companies in the UK as well as running training programmes both at home and abroad. She now has a busy teaching schedule, and has worked on a number of West End musicals as vocal coach – including WickedShrek- the Musical; Ghost- the Musical; Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown; Once; Groundhog Day; Jesus Christ, Superstar; Funny Girl to name but a few..

During Mary’s long association with English National Opera, she devised and ran a highly successful performance skills course, ‘The Knack’, for eleven years, and between 2004 and 2006 she was also an Artistic Associate for the company. Now she is Vocal Talent Consultant for Glyndebourne Opera.

Between November 2007 and May 2013 she created and led Voicelab, a new initiative at London’s Southbank Centre where she was an Artist in Residence and worked with many world class artists including Bobby McFerrin, Elbow and Paco Pena, and on music that ranged from Beethoven to Bernstein and beyond.

She has appeared regularly on television – Musicality; Operatunity for Channel 4; Cardiff Singer of the World and Choir of the Year for BBC – as well as being a frequent contributor to Radio, both as expert and presenter.

Mary is also in demand as a writer. In 2007 The Singer’s Handbook (Faber) was published, co-written with Anthony Legge. She has also published a series of selected vocal repertoire collections with coaching notes, The Boosey Voice Coach (Boosey & Hawkes) – (English; French and German volumes ).
