In memory of Hester Dickson, Malcolm Martineau’s mother and founding staff pianist on the course, this prize covers full course fees for a singer, or a student pianist to work alongside our experienced staff.
2025 recipient of the prize:
Sydney Pexton is a soprano from Salt Lake City, Utah. She recently graduated with her Master of Music in Opera Performance at the New England Conservatory.
She has appeared in a range of operatic and concert performances with NEC and Utah Valley University, including roles in L’incoronazione di Poppea, Die Fledermaus, and Les Contes d’Hoffmann. Most recently, she performed the role of Elaine in NEC’s production of John Musto’s Later the Same Evening, and was selected as a New Music Fellow at the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival’s New Music Workshop, where she premiered eight works as part of the Emerging Artist Series. She will be attending the Toronto Summer Music Festival as an Art of Song Fellow this summer.
At NEC, Sydney has covered the role of Despina in Mozart’s Così fan tutte, performed Little Red in Seymour Barab’s Little Red Riding Hood, and appeared regularly in the Liederabend concert series, working closely with renowned coaches including Cameron Stowe, JJ Penna, and Tanya Blaich. Additional performance highlights include The Governess in Britten’s The Turn of the Screw with the Trentino Music Festival and Adele in Strauss’s Die Fledermaus with Lyric Opera Studio Weimar.
